The walkable historic core

Main Street and Old Town

Old Town is the most walkable visitor area, but steep grades, snow, parking limits and event closures shape the day. Plan the arrival and return before filling the middle.

Choose an arrival plan before you start walking

Old Town is compact on a map, but Main Street’s grade, winter surfaces, event closures and limited parking can change the length and effort of a visit. Decide whether to arrive by transit, drop-off or a public lot before adding timed stops. The City’s parking map shows lot locations and rules; posted signs and event instructions control on the day.

If driving, save the exact garage or surface lot and note how you will get back after dinner. Park once and walk the core instead of circling between nearby stops. For a bus visit, check the schedule for the time you expect to leave, not only the outbound trip.

Sequence the visit around grade and energy

  1. Choose a starting point that fits your group’s mobility, footwear and current weather.
  2. Group shops, galleries and any scheduled museum or event in one direction.
  3. Estimate the uphill return before setting a dinner reservation or promising a short visit.
  4. Keep a lower-effort option nearby if snow, ice, heat or fatigue makes the longer walk uncomfortable.

A short distance does not describe slope, surface, curb transitions or snow conditions. Travelers with mobility needs should ask the City or venue about the exact route and entrance before relying on a map line.
